WHY THE NAME HEll?
Well, this was asked already before as ‘what question do you not
want to hear again... It is the same since 30 years, in almost every
second interview... It is simply Helmut (Geier). now i made maybe
a wrong move in calling my new album ‘Teufelswerk’ (devil’s
work).
THAT WOUlD HAVE BEEN MY NEXT QUESTION: WHY THIS NAME FOR
THE AlBUM?
Basically i am into german names and it fits perfectly in my whole
dj-Carreer, it fits perfect with my artist name, and it reflects the
two sides of my life, the night and the day life. And it does not
necessarily mean it comes out of hell...
WEll, IT DOES COME OUT OF HEll :-)
And i like the way non-Germans speak it as well :-)
HOW MANY RECORDS DO YOU OWN? YOU ARE WEll-kNOWN FOR HAV-
ING ONE OF THE BIGGEST COllECTIONS SO FAR...
To be honest i have no idea, i was a collector, and i was not col-
lecting recods but labels, the whole output of labels, and it was
all kind of styles, so at the end of the ‘90s i reached a point
where I had nearly every single record that came out, there was
nothing left... It was a real problem for me, everywhere i went,
from Chicago to Japan, i went directly into the record shops and
bought them off. The better question would be ‘how much money
i spent on records’...
THAT IS A GOOD ONE?
Well, i think i could buy a house from all this money... A nice
one, even in Ibiza. The thing is it became part of my knowledge,
i mixed all kinds of styles because i had the records, that was
before everything was available to everybody via internet.
HERE WE GO, HOW DO YOU SEE All THIS NEW DEVElOPMENT, GOING
All DIGITAl AND PEOPlE BUYING TRAX FROM THE NET?
If all this would have happened 30 years ago i would have saved
a lot of money.. I am not a guy who fights against it, you know.
For me the Cd is still a very good medium for Albums, i still keep
buying Cds, buy the whole stuff and then listzen at home to it
and choose the trax i like to play. and i for sure will like that the
people buy my new album as well, not just a few trax of it. We are
in the middle of the biggest revolution the music scene is going
through, and nobody can know what will be in five year’s time
because all is going so fast now. The major companies are in trou-
ble now because they loose their influence. I even heard of some
stories from Italy where you have to have the original at home
when you play an mp3 in the clubs and a kind of nightlife police is
going round checking the clubs – i mean how can you do that?
WE SAW A PICTURE OF YOU NEXT TO A lADY DRESSED IN FETISH
ClOTHING ON A PRESS RElEASE, ARE YOU INTO FETISH?
Who is not? Aren’t you? I guess almost everybody is into fetish,
who does not like to dress in leather or latex? I guess it is more
like most of the people do not want to talk about it and do it
secretly or just dream of it... why not doing it?`I like a lot play-
ing around with it, use it in images. With the girl on the picture
i work very closely now, i am doing her bookings for her shows,
becoming almost her manager. This whole scene is very close to
ours, it’s the same music, so why not join? They are not just into
gothic and that kind of stuff, in Berlin we have a club called Kit
Kat Club, i played their 15-years anniversary and i will never for-
get the night...
IS MUSIC THE ONlY DRUG?
There is a lot of drugs going around, but music is the language
of a higher communication, that is how i understand music. a lot
of people might use them in the studio to produce their music, i
never did so, i need to be clear while doing it – if i smoke some-
thing i get tired, and with any other stuff i can not concentrate
on what i want to do because i get so excited. And the same hap-
pens when i play somewhere, my drug is Fanta Lemon :-)
YOU ARE ACTUAllY kNOWN OF NOT DOING ANY OF THIS...
People think i am a freak because i don’t do it! But honestly, for
me it is perfect, when i come home i go sleep, swimming, go on
my bycicle, i love doing that...
IS THERE ANY GENRE YOU DID NOT TOUICH IN YOUR PRODUCTIONS?
It is true, i was looking for a new style and i found something,
you will not believe it – it is german schlager music from the 60’s
and 70’s.
(BIG lAUGHTER EVERYWHERE, AS WE SIT IN SPACE IN A BACk
OFFICE...) I GUESS WE HAVE TO EXPlAIN THIS TO OUR READERS...
It is a kind of Chanson but very commercial, a whole orchestra
playing and singing german lyrics, outstandng music. This guy
Frank Farian who was also the producer of Boney M. did as well
Milly Vanilly, or there was an act called Eruption, it was kind of
disco music, so i will try to update it a little bit. There is thou-
sands of songs and until now nobody touched it...
HEll IN 20 YEARS?
Still playing music, train my kids in doing it and becoming their
manager, but as well going on producing if am not deaf by then.
But honestly, djing is the thing i most enjoy in my life so why not
going on doing it? For sure everybody says that but it means that
we really love what we do, so for the next 20 years i see nothing
else coming... It is mainly about keeping you in shape, and as i do
not do any kind of doping i guess i got a good chance! If Space is
still there i will still be coming back :-)
WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST APPEARANCE IN IBIzA?
It was in the early 90s, i had trouble to get in the clubs as some
friends and me could not find a ticket and had no money, so we
went to the port and found a bar where we got some tickets...
When we got in the clubs i found that it was not really my music
but in the last few years it changed a lot. My first gig in Ibiza
was in the early 90s together with Green Velvet and Jeff Mills
in Space, and they had a dancer dressed up in indian style, he
danced so crazy i was fascinated by his way of moving and i never
saw it again...
DUB: COMPARED TO THIS, HOW DO YOU SEE IBIZA TODAY?
Honestly i can not say a lot, i just came from the airport and went
directly into Space, from what i saw it is a bit more quiet but it’s
still early in the season - and coming here to Space is always fan-
tastic, i love to work with the people from We love..., they take
really good care of us all :-)
HElMUT, THANkS FOR YOUR WORDS AND lET’S GO AND CHECk OUT
